To explore some of the beliefs store owners have when using English to name their businesses?

Specific objectives:

List the main beliefs given by store and shop owners

Interview some business owners to find their beliefs behind the name of the stores and shops.

Description

With the globalization process English has proliferated in urban spaces around the world. A phenomena that has cause great impact among street walkers because it seems that even streets have become a source for learning. These public displays of language have been described in other countries such as “linguistic landscapes” and are of interest to us from the potential of discovering the reason and possible beliefs in a small town like Monteria started such a linguistic process in the market; where stores, restaurants, shops and even bars are named using the English language. Why is it attractive?

To discover the aforementioned fact we decided to carry out a small scale research project that may help us offer some of the beliefs that owners have to use a foreign language such as English to name their business.

Methodology

Qualitative research is concerned with understanding and interpreting another person's social world through accessing their lived experiences. Three types of qualitative field research methods are described here that focus on capturing lived experiences: direct observation; participant observation; and qualitative interviews.

 

Plan of Action

To start with we created a series of elicitation methods to gather some important data from the target population. The focus of this research has 20 businesses located in different part of the cities. Intentionally chosen to also analyze if the context may affect people’s beliefs.

Those stores, schools and restaurants chosen were visited during their normal workday, and it was possible to see that they count with a high number of clients.
